So there I was earlier tonight, working on the final chapters of Destiny Fulfilled, when it hit me... hard.
The characters were all fighting for time in the finale. Understandable I guess, given that they all play such a large role in the whole line of books. Annoying? Yes. Inconvenient? Yes. I'm trying to finish up a college degree and I don't have time for bickering among my cast of characters. School and clinic starts back up next week. I was hoping I'd make it farther than this by now.
There I was trying to write about one character's adventure and another would just butt into the picture. It's like trying to watch a show when someone keeps changing the channels. Sadly, I don't have control of the remote. Fortunately, I do have an understanding editing cast. My main editor is wonderful and has agreed to sit down with me for hours later this week and try to map everything out.
The truth is, I know how the book should end but the constant flipping of characters is not giving me that flowing word like I prefer. All I can do is write it down as it comes and pray my editors can somehow come up with a way to make sense of the madness.
My writing process is such:
1. I see a picture/movie in my mind with full senses blaring. If I wanted to torture my readers I could write a description that would make Nathaniel Hawthorne jealous. Two pages about a bush... I could probably do a chapter, bring it on.
2. I write it down as quickly as I can, many times going back later to fill in the details. When I first write, I'm more concerned about the interactions and dialogues. Oh yes, I'm a heavy dialogue writer. I personally think it's more realistic. We talk our way through life... why shouldn't my characters...
3. I try to shut if off when I have to be in professional mode. (this step doesn't always seem to happen)
The horrible part is I don't always get the pictures in an order that makes sense. That's the problem I'm having with this ending. *sigh* And it's not helping me sleep either.
Maybe tomorrow will go smoother.... A tenant to unruly renters can hope right?
Follow author Jennifer Feuerstein through the trials and fun of writing. I'll be discussing my books, my future plans, and the fun of dealing with an entire cast of characters living "upstairs" while moving through life. Welcome to the ramblings of The Crowded Mind.
About Me
- Jennifer Feuerstein
- Being an author is an amusing series of ups and downs. As a self-published writer, there are a lot of stories going on at once. A lot of stories means a lot of characters bouncing around and a lot of juggling. It's not easy being an author of fantasy in the real world, but I try to get by.
